Hon. Angela Edwards Roberts


Angela Edwards Roberts, the first elected African American female judge in the Commonwealth of Virginia, has served as a Judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Oliver Hill Courts Building, in Richmond, Virginia, since March 1990.

A native of Caroline County, Virginia, Judge Roberts was educated in the county’s public schools.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Virginia Tech where she graduated with honors.  She earned her law degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prior to her elevation to the bench, Judge Roberts’ public service included employment as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Richmond, Bar Counsel for the Virginia State Bar and Budget Analyst for the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget. Judge Roberts was formerly a member of the Georgia State Bar, and engaged in the private practice of law in Richmond and Atlanta.

Judge Roberts is a member of numerous professional organizations, committees and boards. She has received awards and recognition for her work both on and off the bench. She has been a passionate supporter of educational opportunities for all youth.  Judge Roberts has served as her court’s judicial liaison for the Annie E. Casey Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative and the Juvenile Justice Collaborative which focuses on keeping youth in school and out of court.  Judge Roberts is married to Roscoe C. Roberts, Senior Assistant Attorney General and General Counsel to the University of Virginia.   They have two married adult children.
