NJ trial court administrator inducted into the Warren E. Burger Society

Williamsburg, Va., Nov. 20, 2019 — Howard H. Berchtold, Jr., trial court administrator for the Atlantic/Cape May Vicinage in New Jersey, is being inducted into the National Center for State Courts’ Warren E. Burger Society.

The Burger Society honors individuals who have used their time, talent, and support to the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) in exceptional ways. It is named for the former chief justice of the United States who helped found NCSC in 1971. The induction ceremony takes place Nov. 21 in Washington, D.C.

Berchtold is the highest-ranking staff executive in Atlantic and Cape May counties, overseeing all court operations including case coordination, finance, human resources, information systems, probation services, jury utilization, facilities, records and community outreach. He has worked there for 38 years.

He also has served on numerous regional and national organizations, including the National Association for Court Management, the Mid-Atlantic Association for Court Management, which he led, and NCSC’s Institute for Court Management (ICM) Advisory Committee.

Berchtold became an ICM Fellow in 1986 and has received the ICM Fellow Star Award, which recognizes the Fellow who demonstrates excellence in the advancement of court administration through leadership and education.

The National Center for State Courts, headquartered in Williamsburg, Va., is a nonprofit court organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice by providing leadership and service to the state courts. Founded in 1971 by the Conference of Chief Justices and Chief Justice of the United States Warren E. Burger, NCSC provides education, training, technology, management, and research services to the nation’s state courts.
