Indiana chief justice takes the helm of two national court organizations
Williamsburg, Va., (July 27, 2022) – Indiana Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush has been named president of the Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ) and chair of the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) Board of Directors. Both one-year terms began this week during CCJ’s annual conference and NCSC’s Board of Directors meetings in Chicago.
Founded in 1949 and comprised of the top judicial officers of each state, CCJ promotes the interests and effectiveness of state judicial systems by developing policies and educational programs designed to improve court operations. CCJ also acts as the primary representative of the state courts before Congress and federal executive agencies.
“Chief Justice Loretta Rush is someone who converts her passion into action, every day. She has been at the forefront of improving the administration of justice in Indiana, the Midwest, and nationally, and we are fortunate to benefit from her leadership in this national role,” said Mary C. McQueen, president of the National Center for State Courts.
Chief Justice Rush, who joined the Indiana Supreme Court in 2012, first became chief justice in 2014 and was reappointed in 2019. She served as a Tippecanoe Superior Court 3 judge for 14 years and spent 15 years in private practice before her appointment to the state’s high court.
Chief Justice Rush served as the co-chair of the National Judicial Opioid Task Force (NJOTF) and serves on the executive committee of the National Judicial Task Force to Examine State Courts’ Response to Mental Illness. She was appointed by John G. Roberts, Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, to serve as a member of the Judicial Conference Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction.
